What are age spots?
Age spots or also called liver spots is a benign pigmented skin abnormality that is usually light brown in color. An age spot, however, can also be red or very dark in color. They are often seen in older people with sun-damaged white skin. Age spots are often caused by excessive sun exposure and are often seen on the head, hands and arms.
How do age spots occur
Pigment is made by the skin and it gives the skin color. When there is sun on the skin, more pigment is made and the skin will tan. Once this process does not work properly, age spots appear. What actually happens is an overproduction of pigment, including on the décolletage or face, mainly where the sun shines the most.
What helps against age spots?
Wearing good sun protection so a good SPF and day cream from a young age can help with delaying/reducing skin damage later in life. For the body, not overexposing to the sun is the best tip for reducing age spots. In addition, supplementing with vitamin C can suppress excessive pigment production. This can prevent pigmentation spots.
Are age spots dangerous?
They are benign pigment spots so it is not harmful to humans. The reason many people want to get rid of it is because they don't like the look of it. Removing age spots by laser is the most effective way to get rid of your age spots. During treatment, the pigment granules are heated by laser light causing them to break down and be disposed of by your body. The pigment spot then turns white gray and shortly after, it becomes a lot darker than you are used to. Sometimes spot bleeding and/or bruising occurs. These eventually become small blue spots that recover completely. After lasering your age spots, no scars will remain and the spots will be completely gone. Usually, you will be rid of your age spots after just one treatment.
