Tattoo removal on dark skin will in some cases require more treatments than on white skin. This is because darker skin contains more natural pigments and will require lower treatments.

The StarWalker works on the basis of an acoustic reaction in the skin, which means that there is almost no heat development in the skin surface and therefore no risk of pigmentation or skin damage. With the older lasers (such as the Q-switch ND-YAG, Alexandrite, Ruby, Medlite and Harmony laser), scarring was a common side effect. This is because these lasers work on the basis of a thermal effect. So much heat is produced in the skin that the skin is damaged too much, resulting in scarring.
