What is pigment?
Pigment is also called melanin.
It is a colouring matter that occurs naturally in the body, in your hair, the iris of your eye and, of course, in your skin. Pigment protects your skin from the UV radiation contained in sunlight. If you spend a lot of time in the sun, the skin produces more pigment in the form of a protective layer.
Hyperpigmentation involves an accumulation of this skin pigment. This causes localised dark pigmentation spots in the skin. Hyperpigmentation is a common complaint among sun lovers and, in old age, a consequence of the ageing process.
Treating pigmentation spots. How does it work?
During the treatment we heat the pigment granules by means of laser light, causing them to break down and be discharged by your body. The pigment spot turns white grey and shortly afterwards it becomes a lot darker than you are used to. Sometimes small spots of bleeding appear. These eventually become small blue spots that recover completely.
* Unfortunately not every pigmentation spot is treatable. Only pigmentation spots in the top layer of skin (epidermis) can be treated.
After treatment
In the days following the treatment, dark brown and sometimes black scabs will appear. It is important that you absolutely do not scratch it. If you do, it will disturb the healing process and you may get a white spot that often does not colour back.
There may also be some blisters. This is normal and will dry up by itself. You will return for a check-up after 4 weeks and in some cases a second appointment may be necessary.

You can compare it to rubber bands that shoot into the skin. During the treatment, we use a Zimmer Cool device, which numbs the skin with ice-cold air. This makes the treatment 75% less sensitive.
